“Good Feelings” originated as two songwriting exercises, created a decade apart, that now meet each other as one complete song.

11 years ago, the music for the verse section was composed with the goal of creating a catchy melody using only one chord. Never straying from an E major chord until the chorus, the intro and verse build with cascading acoustic and electric guitars. Autoharp and synthesizer quietly support the band instrumentation with delicate sound textures.

At the chorus, the song energy changes, which was inspired by another songwriting exercise Etter tried in late 2025. The challenge was to write a song based around a sample. Etter says, “I am deeply inspired by music that uses sampling, but had never experimented with it myself. Listening to Panda Bear & Sonic Boom’s song “Livin’ in the After” specifically inspired me to find a classical music sample I could chop up. The Donizetti String Quartet No 15 is the one I latched onto for this experiment. The fast-paced, dynamic string quartet ultimately became the perfect counter to the chill energy of the intro and verse.”

Similar to Hi Crime’s 2024 album Spirit & Candor, “Good Feelings” sees Mitch Etter working alone as an obsessive bedroom producer to create the track. Near the end of the process, Mitch’s scratch drums were replaced with drums by Rocky Martin, and vocal harmonies supported by singers Lauren Fernandez and Zach Horton.
